How did you find your apprenticeship with BES Utilities?

When I started my apprenticeship at BES, I had never been in an office environment before, so this was a great introduction into the world of work. From day one, I felt completely comfortable within the business, everyone was so friendly and approachable, so I never felt out of place.

The apprenticeship was equally enjoyable and challenging, it allowed me to push myself and step out of my comfort zone, while picking up skills along the way. It was nice to be the go-to person in the office for all types of tasks and queries.

What skills did you learn throughout your apprenticeship?

During my time as an apprentice, I was able to gain concrete skills in IT software and Microsoft applications, specifically Excel. As I’ve worked across the business, I have also been able to pick up a wealth of knowledge about the energy sector.

My organisational skills have improved greatly, while managing and prioritising tasks that I do at my desk, as well as tasks that I needed to complete across the two offices. Time management is essential in this role when juggling a number of tasks, you need to prioritise your time correctly and make sure everything gets done.

Working within a large office also enhanced my communication skills. I was talking to a number of my co-workers every day, as well as taking calls, so my tone and delivery is the best it’s ever been.

Tell us more about the tasks you carried out during your apprenticeship

I was given the responsibility of various tasks, such as providing day to day administrative support across the operations teams, photocopying, sending emails, meeting and greeting visitors, carrying out mail merge exercises, preparing welcome packs, and scheduling meetings. The range of tasks provided me with a full overview of the business, and it helped me discover what I’m good at, and the type of work I enjoy doing.

How have you benefitted from your apprenticeship with BES Utilities?

I have become significantly more confident in myself. In addition to being more adventurous and open to pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I now use my initiative inside and outside of work thanks to the tasks and challenges I have taken on throughout my employment.

What happened when you finished your apprenticeship?

Once I had completed the qualification after 13 months, I was given smart targets to complete and a personal development plan to help shape my future at BES. This involved various training modules in a number of roles to find where I fit best across the numerous teams, as well as open discussions about how I wanted to progress within the business. All of this combined ensured the smooth transition into my new career as a Supply Point Administrator.
