Harry enhances his IT skills, thanks to placement at BES Utilities

Blackpool Sixth Form student Harry Mitchem will experience the world of IT and boost his employability skills thanks to his placement at BES Utilities.

Stephen Dean, IT and Change Director at BES, recently visited Blackpool Sixth Form to talk to students about the benefits of a placement with the organisation, and after listening to what he had to say, Harry decided it was the company for him.

Harry, who is studying for a triple BTEC in IT, will be with the IT Department one day a week for the next 12 months, and he’s getting stuck in already.

“My first couple of weeks have been great,” said Harry. “Everyone has been really welcoming and I’m already learning a lot. I’ve been buddied up with Josh, one of the IT Support Team, who has really helped me and shown me the ropes.

“I’ve been working on requests from across the whole business, from setting up PCs and laptops for new starters, to fixing issues with the internet and generally helping people out.”

“Having this work placement on my CV will really help me with my future career where I hope to work in IT.”

As well as job shadowing and dealing with requests from across the business, Harry will also have the opportunity to complete some IT e-learning courses, which will be funded by BES.

“We hope to give Harry a good knowledge and understanding of IT so he can use his new-found skills to gain employment in the IT sector,” said Stephen Dean. “As well as being an extra pair of hands for us, Harry can also offer a fresh perspective on our processes. So far, he’s been really eager to learn, and he uses his initiative to problem solve.”

“BES is committed to corporate social responsibility, and by offering work placements, we can prepare students for the world of work, and help upskill the workforce of the future.”
